Every year, Davidoff issues a limited edition box with the theme of the current year of the Oriental Zodiac. This is the 2016 version, The Year of the Monkey. This box is relatively uncommon and once these are gone, they will not be available commercially again.
In keeping with its name, the box is made of bamboo, giving the exterior a tropical look. The drawer, which originally held cigars and now holds pens, is wrapped in muted red leather (probably faux leather) and lined in more bamboo. A leather pull graces the front of the drawer and two rare earth magnets smoothly grab it and hold it closed. The bottom of the drawer is covered with red felt so that it will not scratch a surface when removed from the box.
I consider the design to be quite well conceived and did not want to introduce additional elements in converting it to a pen box. I found some microsuede cloth that is a very close match in color to the leather surrounding and used it to line the inside of the drawer, both bottom and ends, leaving the bamboo sides fully exposed.
The same microsuede cloth lines the nine individual pen compartments, ensuring that your pens will not touch anything but cloth.
The box measures 10 1/8 inches wide, 9 1/4 inches front to back, and 2 1/2 inches deep. Each of the nine pens can be up to 6 1/2 inches long. As you will see in the pictures, even my Montblanc 149 fits comfortably into this space.
