Every year, Davidoff issues a limited edition of cigars in a specially-designed box, dedicated to the current year of the twelve-year Chinese zodiac. 2014 was the Year of the Horse, and the original purchasers of these boxes of cigars have kept a close hold on the empty boxes. Recently, I managed to purchase one in almost-new condition, and I have now converted it for use as a pen box.
The Year of the Horse box is finished in glossy red and black velvety cloth, embellished with a rather tasteful logo. The red, black, and gold theme is carried inside as well. I have tried to maintain that style as closely as possible while finishing the former cigar compartment to hold eight pens appropriately.
The cigar compartment itself was unfinished wood – common in cigar boxes to help maintain proper humidity – so I stained it jet black to complement the black cloth, then added a red pen tray surrounded by red felt in the compartment. You will surely agree that it will show off your pens in elegant style – and nobody else will have one just like this!
The pen tray is flocked with a velvety red material and contains each pen completely within its individual compartment. The maximum pen length is 6 inches, and as you will see in the pictures, it can hold some really large pens, such as the Montblanc 149, Laban Mento, and Sheaffer Oversize Balance and PFM.
The box lid is secured with a magnetic catch and I have added a 2mm thick foam pad on the bottom to prevent sliding or scuffing. The box measures 10 1/4 inches by 8 inches by 1 1/2 inches.
