SOLD: Two Double Decker Twelve Pen Boxes

Green tray aside

Here are two Don Gonzalez Special Reserve boxes that I have repurposed into pen boxes.  The two are identical except for the color I have chosen for their lining.  One is lined in Hunter Green and the other in Cardinal Red.

Each box has two lift-out trays holding six pens per tray, with the pen slots being generous enough for almost any pen.  The pen slots measure 3/4″ wide and 7″ long.

I’ve finished the interior of the box and the pen trays in Minwax “Gunstock” stain and added satin polyurethane varnish, then lined each slot with felt to protect each individual pen.  The bottom of the box is covered with a 2mm foam pad.

The exterior dimensions are 8 1/4″ by 7 1/2″ by 2 1/2″.

The Don Gonzalez Special Reserve boxes are priced at $65 each plus shipping.  If you are interested, please email me at BamaPen@jehubbard.com and be sure to include your location or ZIP code for a mailing cost quote.  Also, please indicate whether you prefer the box with Hunter Green or Cardinal Red lining.

I accept payment via PayPal.  I mail via USPS Priority Mail in the USA and via USPS International First Class Package outside the USA.

SOLD: Eight Pen Double Decked Box – Eiroa

Closed

Here’s a small box that will hold eight pens ready for your use.  The box is by Eiroa and is a nicely made box  with one unusual aspect: it has a lift off lid rather than the more usual hinged lid.

Inside, I have fitted a pen tray that holds four pens and lifts out to reveal four more beneath it.  Each tray will hold pens up to 6 3/16 inches long and as fat as a Montblanc 149 – or even a bit fatter.

Because the bottom of the box is even prettier (in my opinion) than the top, I have used four foam “feet” to provide non-slip, non-marring protection instead of my usual full foam pad.  Not that you will have much occasion to turn the box over, but if you do, there is that pretty underside.

The box measures 5 x 7 x 2 1/2 inches and is finished in a very dark brown.  I stained the interior in a contrasting reddish brown and the pen trays and pen compartments are lined in tan wool material.  Your pens will not touch anything but the wool.

The Eiroa Eight Pen Box is priced at $35 plus shipping. SOLD If you are interested, please email BamaPen@jehubbard.com and include your location or ZIP Code for a mailing cost quote.

I mail by Priority Mail in the USA and International First Class Package outside the USA.

SOLD: Really Different…a Round Twelve Pen Box

Here’s a box I’ve not seen before, and not too likely to see again.  It’s a round double decker box from Foundry Cigars.  The three parts of the box nest together with the outside wood strips matching from bottom to top.  The lid features a “steampunk” style image.

PLEASE NOTE: This box can only hold pens up to 5 3/16 inches long.  Please measure the pens that you would consider placing in this box to be certain that they will fit.

I’ve repurposed it to hold twelve pens, six in each of its two levels, each pen up to 5 3/16 inches long.  That is not long enough for longer pens, but it will handle many other pens.  For example, in the pictures are a variety of Esterbrook J, SJ, and LJ pens and several different models of Sheaffer Balance, Military Balance, and Triumph Sentinel pens.

I have lined the former cigar compartments with red felt and fitted red velvety flocked pen trays to keep each pen securely in its place.  I’ve even lined the inside of the lid with matching red felt so that a pen can’t touch wood in any direction.

The box measures 7 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 3/4 inches tall.

If you have the right pens, then this will make a very interesting desktop pen box for you.

The Round Twelve Pen Box is priced at $50 plus shipping. SOLD If you are interested, please click here to email me for a shipping cost quote.

I ship via USPS Priority Mail inside the US and via USPS International First Class Package outside the US.

SOLD: CAO La Traviata Animado 12 Pen Box – trade-in bargain

I just took this La Traviata “Animado” 12 pen box as a trade-in from a customer for a larger box.  It has been used for less than a year and is in like-new condition.  It is particularly attractive because this is one of the older style La Traviata boxes and is made of Spanish Cedar with box-jointed corners.  The newer boxes have mitered corners and are not as attractive.

The Animado will hold twelve pens, each up to 5 1/2 inches long, in individual red felt-lined compartments with wooden dividers.  It is a very good look, and protects pens well.

New, this box would sell for $50 with this style of divider, but I will offer it in its slightly used condition for $40 plus shipping. SOLD That is a 20% discount.  If you are interested, please click here to email me for a shipping cost quote.  Be sure to include your location or ZIP code.

I ship via USPS Priority Mail in the USA and by USPS International First Class Mail outside the US.

SOLD: Eiroa Eighteen Pen Box

I’ve not seen an Eiroa box before, but it has a very nice red/brown exterior factory finish with understated black logo and labeling.

I’ve stained and varnished the bare wood interior and created a double deck pen box with nine pens up to six inches long on each level – a total of eighteen pens.

The individual pen compartments are lined with soft chocolate brown microsuede to protect your pens.

The box measures 9 1/2 inches by 7 inches by 2 3/4 inches and will make a nice storage and display unit for your desk.

The Eiroa Eighteen Pen Box is priced at SOLD.  If you are interested, please click here to email me for a shipping cost quote.  Be sure to include your location or ZIP code.

SOLD: Famous Writers Series – Mark Twain – Double Deck, 14 Pens

Mark Twain closed

The latest in my Famous Writers Series, a double-decked, fourteen pen box featuring an image of Mark Twain inside the lid and a Mississippi River steamboat, where Sam Clemens got his pen name, on the lid.

The box is finished inside and out in black, dappled with copper and grey, representing an old box that has traveled the path of Mark Twain, up and down the Mississippi, across the Atlantic, and many places in America.

Inside there is one lift-out tray and a lower compartment, each holding seven pens up to six inches long.  The individual pen compartments are lined with a grey “leather” microsuede to further carry out the vintage theme.

The Mark Twain Double Decker is priced at $55 plus shipping. SOLD If you are interested, please click here to email me for a shipping cost quote.

I ship via USPS Priority Mail in the USA and USPS International First Class Mail internationally.

SOLD: Double Decker Twelve Pen Box

Double Decker Twelve Pen Box closedThis is a two tray box with six individual felt-lined compartments in each tray.  The box and trays are finished with Minwax “Gunstock” stain and several coats of hand-rubbed Minwax polyurethane varnish.

As pictured, the box is not quite finished.  I will add red lift ribbons to make removing the pen trays easier and also will add a 2mm thick foam pad to the bottom of the box for a non-slip, non-marring surface to protect your desk or table top.

In the gallery below you will see some Photoshopped versions of the box with different treatments inside the lid.  I can leave the inside as it is – stained and varnished, or I can add artwork or felt.  This is the buyer’s choice and there will be no additional charge for any of these treatments.

The Double Decker Twelve Pen Box is priced at $45 plus shippingSOLD If you are interested, please email me and include your location so that I can provide a shipping cost quote.

SOLD: Double Decker Pen Case, Steampunk Style

Here’s the latest in my Steampunk style pen cases.  This is a double-decker, holding seven pens on each level, for a total of 14 pens.

Both the exterior and interior of the case are painted to resemble patinaed metal, and original artwork (by me) featuring a fountain pen theme decorates the interior of the lid.  The lid is secured by a brass latch, and a 2mm foam pad on the bottom of the box provides a non-marring finish to protect your desk or table top.

The individual pen compartments continue the steampunk style, with the dividers continuing the patinaed metal look, while the compartments are lined with soft suede cloth finished in a leather look to protect your pens.

The Double-Decker Steampunk Pen Case is priced at $50 plus shipping.  SOLD  If you are interested, please email me for a shipping cost quote.

I normally ship in the USA by USPS Priority Mail and internationally by USPS International First Class.  If you prefer some other shipping mentod, please let me know and I’ll try to accommodate your wishes.

ALL SOLD: Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Limited Edition

I acquired this cream-colored double-tray Jaime Garcia box some time ago, but customer orders have kept me so busy that I’ve not had time to finish it until now.  The exterior is a beautiful glossy cream with royal blue lettering, but the interior was completely unfinished, raw wood.  It originally held sixteen cigars in individual glass tubes, but I could see sixteen fountain pens nestled into individual suede cloth lined compartments.

I completely disassembled the box, sanded every surface on the inside and the trays, and painted the interior to match the outside.  I added ends to the trays (there were none originally) to keep pens from sliding out accidentally, and I added gold lift ribbons to the bottom tray to facilitate lifting it out of the box.

For lining, I chose royal blue suede cloth, and I hand fitted the lining to each of the sixteen compartments.  The same cloth is on the bottom of each tray.  The underside of the box is covered with black felt for a non-marring finish.

My favorite cigar shop has some more of these boxes, and if I get my hands on one I’ll offer it for sale, but this one is going to store my own pens…for now.

Price: SOLD:

The cigar shops tell me that there won’t be any more of these boxes…ever.

Making the My Father Limited Edition Pen Storage Box

Have you ever wondered what goes into converting a nice box like the My Father Limited Edition into an elegant pen storage unit?  I’d like to share some before and after pictures with you.

See the next post for the finished box…

The exterior of this box is beautifully finished as it comes from the factory and no work is required other than to add a pad to the bottom to prevent scratching of your desk or table surface.

Inside is a totally different story.  Nothing is finished; it is all rough bare wood.  The cigars that it held were protected in individual tubes, so the bare wood was not an issue.  But, your pens deserve much better.

I sand every surface, then apply a MinWax stain that matches the exterior color.  Then, each part is varnished with three coats of MinWax polyurethane satin varnish, hand-rubbed between each coat with 0000 steel wool for a smooth finish.  This picture shows one of the side pieces before and after.

The trays require a good bit of work.  First, they do not have an end cap to prevent pens from sliding right out the end of the compartments.  So, I use my band saw to trim just enough off the end of the trays to allow room for a 3/32″ end cap, cut to fit.

The trays are sanded and finished just like the rest of the interior, then individual compartment liners are cut to fit the complex curved surface.  This picture shows the unfinished tray and the completed one, ready for your pens.

I hope this gives you an idea of the hours of work that go into this transformation.
